delicious, bubbly
carbohydrate; topped with some
alluring garlic
Tagging: James Garside | Somsubhra Banerjee| Dr. Fatima Imam | Anthi Psomiadou | Michael Burg, MD if you’re up to it and anyone else interested in today’s prompt: GARLIC.
Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) has definitely been consuming garlic at an alarming rate since she lives alone and doesn’t have to interact with others on a regular basis…
cheesecake is so classic
so delicious
a dessert, a treat for those
special occasions
but never had I ever thought
what kind of cheese
comprised this delicious sweet treat
and how cream cheese
and sour cream
seemingly non-sweet ingredients
somehow whipped up with
a ton of sugar
results in this
miracle.
Tagging: Vijini Mallawaarachchi | Penofgold | Shaista Malik | Amy Pierovich | Shivangi Patel if you’re up to it and anyone else interested in today’s prompt: What’s a food or concept that you never really questioned but when you finally realized what it was, really surprised or shocked you?
as a child of immigrants
so many of us have coped
with just being swept forward
swept into the future
swept towards a solution
immediately
because there was no time to dwell
only time to work,
no time to play,
only time to hone CV padding extracurriculars,
no time to feel,
only solutions
to survive
a world where we were not welcome,
because that’s how our parents learned to survive
as they needed to,
and that was our blueprint
for survival growing up.
from a position of considerably more privilege now, I ask: do I still need to grasp on…
Hedonia,
the bubbly passionate extrovert
ready to jump on any question
taste every colour of the rainbow,
sat at the edge of her chair,
ready to run at the sign of the bell.
Eudaimonia,
her quiet twin sister,
quietly doodling a budding, symmetrical succulent,
listening to the teacher
and quietly wondering to herself.
Hedonia, soon as the recess bell rang, wanted to feel the wintery air against her skin, listen to the best, heart-thumping songs on her phone, but also to run through the art hall and see everyone’s best creations, taste the sweetest, most flavorful snacks, smell the scent…
This week’s shortform theme is: What is your current (or past) most passionate interest? This past week I sat as my friend explained her recent and random deep rabbit hole into learning about Russian Figure Skating drama between coaches and their athletes. I’ve also fell down similar rabbit holes, particularly watching the oddest documentaries on Youtube! What about you? Let me know what your rabbit holes have been! 🐇🕳

This is just a guideline for inspiration! You may submit shortforms related to other concepts if other ideas come to…
Saying goodbye to this rectangular February and saying hello to March! Somehow, it smells like spring already, despite frost and snow still covering most of my backyard. Just last week, I had to dig my way out of my basement apartment. Could spring truly be around the corner?
I sure hope so!
I wonder what March will bring? March 2021, a full year after the entire world shut down. What difference has one year made?
Will I stop having dreams where I leave the house and I’m not wearing a mask and I panic? Will I stop having dreams about…
People will continue saying no,
sometimes motivated by biases,
sometimes not.
Forge your new road.
Rest, yes.
But forge your new road when you’ve gathered strength.

Are you looking for a place to submit your personal essays? Someone recently made the request that The Brain is a Noodle begin accepting personal essays. It’s a great suggestion, particularly since personal essays do quite well on this platform.
Given the other projects that we’re cooking up here, it might be a while before we revisit accepting personal essays. Instead, I wanted to shoutout two Medium publications that would be perfect for personal essays!
Age of Empathy! This publication — run by kind editors Aimée Gramblin, Shanna Loga & Bingz Huang — focuses on 80% creative non-fiction and 20% poetry with the motto: hit us with the feels.
Illumination! Founded by Dr Mehmet Yildiz, this is a huge publication that supports writers — big or small — in sharing their writing. It’s such a great beginning spot to start networking with other writers and get your pieces out there!
